Seat Program 2

Year 5 & 6 students have enjoyed their second S.E.A.T Project. After completing their SEAT build, investigating bamboo as a sustainable resource, building their own model bamboo homes, researching life in the Solomon Islands and gaining an insight into their lifestyle, students became interested in helping families and schools.

Students be-friended a community in a village in the Malaita Province and fund-raised for their new Solomon Island friends including the sale of their decorated SEATs. Money raised was used to send directly to the school (as freight can be expensive) where basic needs (chairs, balls, blocks, learning charts) for the students could be purchased on home ground.

"These are photos of the children sitting on the chairs bought with your donation. This is for the first time these children are sitting on chairs. Some of these kids not even have chairs in their homes. This is a great life changing for them. These children are very happy and ask many questions about Hopetown School. The donations bring a lot of new life experiences for these children. The children, mum and the community send their big thank you to you, your students and Hopetown School for your donations. The children and mum were saying they have nothing to give you return, however, they feel they are connected with you through the beautiful heart your school have for them. May God’s blessing be upon you all. ”

Hopetown Breakfast Club: More than just toast!

This term Hopetown School again extends a huge thanks to Wyong Leagues Club for their continued sponsorship of our Breakfast Club.

Breakfast Club runs every day for every student at Hopetown School and as a key part of our Social and Emotional Learning program. It sets up the day for students, allows them time to chat to each other, chat to staff, play board games and supports informal learning of social and life skills which allows students to settle into the day.

Thank you Wyong Leagues Club for your support this term!

IMPORTANT: BUSHFIRE UPDATE

The Rural Fire Service have requested that our school will not operate tomorrow (Tuesday 12th November) to ensure the safety of students and staff. As our school has been identified as a school at increased risk if a bushfire were to break out based on ‘Catastrophic Fire Danger’ ratings for our area.

This means there will be no staff on site tomorrow and we would like you to please make appropriate arrangements for your child.

It is important that you have appropriate supervision in place and that children are not left at home alone in case there is fire activity in your local area.

Regular updates will be posted on the Department’s website https://education.nsw.gov.au

We will recommence operations on Wednesday 13th November unless advised.

Most countries around the world celebrate World Teachers’ Day on October 5, however, because this date usually falls during the Australian school holidays, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day on the last Friday of October instead.

This year, World Teachers’ Day falls on Friday 25 October in Australia.

In 2019, World Teachers’ Day will celebrate teachers with the UNESCO theme, “Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.” The day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, to take stock of achievements, and to address some of the issues central for attracting and keeping the brightest minds and young talents in the profession.
Destination Moon: more missions, more science is the school theme for National Science Week in 2019.

This theme was a way for teachers and students to discover past missions to the Moon and space programs that have solved some of the seemingly unsolvable problems—and current and future space programs, operations and missions. Many of these use big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. This will help forge our future paths in the areas of space operations, space science, Earth observations, positioning systems and communications.

Here’s the cycle of the moon made with Oreo’s!

Yum!

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

This week students at HopeTown have been learning about National Reconciliation Week. National Reconciliation week is an annual celebration and is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, and the achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

On Friday the 1st of June, students attended a whole school assembly to pay their respects and reflect upon the meaning on National Reconciliation week and Sorry Day. They also participated in a range of activities to close the week including cooking, Aboriginal games, art making and a movie.

HopeTown also created our own sea of hands art installation as a dedication to these significant days. The idea from the ANTaR Sea of Hands which was first held in front of Australian Parliament House in 1997 and has come to symbolise the People's movement for Reconciliation and will be Hopetown's acknowledgement.

MAY 27 – Marks the anniversary of Australia's most successful referendum and defining event in our nation's history. In 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census.

JUNE 3 – Commemorates the High Court of Australia's landmark Mabo decision in 1992, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. The recognition paved the way for land rights or Native Title.

In 2018, our major Aboriginal Education project includes students working in mixed class groups to transform Hopetown School's "Sorry Garden" into a larger, outdoor classroom space for students which will include a bush tucker garden and veggie garden to support our TAS program.

Students have been involved in the removal of old and dated structures, re designing and beautifying the area, as well as <g class="gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="9" data-gr-id="9">planting</g> of native flora. Currently, the working title for this garden will be the Yindyamirra Gunya - Learning Place, and it is intended that completion will allow for its official opening during NAIDOC Week celebrations.

We would like to thank The Sydney Royal Botanical Gardens who have joined us in partnership, donating plants, teaching students how to propagate native plants and assisting with the redevelopment of Bush Tucker Garden.

Cross Country

In the last week of Term One, HopeTown School held their annual cross-country carnival. The event was very successful with both students and staff overcoming the challenging 3km course. The event was held in Ourimbah State Forest, incorporating many of the traversing tracks.

After familiarising themselves with the course doing a walkthrough, the students were eager to get the race underway. There was jostling for position in the early stages then the students found their places as their endurance started to show. The boys negotiated the uneven terrain snaking through the hillside, then onto the river and bridge crossings, the final leg was up to Red Hill road to the finish line. It was fantastic to see the boys displaying their determination right up to the end of the course, sprinting the last stages. Once everyone had all caught their breath we then returned to school on the bus for some well-deserved lunch and rehydration.

Upon completion of the presentation, the students had more energy to burn and were extremely cooperative during a whole school sporting activity. All students should be extremely proud of the resilience they exhibited on the day. Well done everyone.

"Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony" -Gandhi

On Friday the 23rd of March, students participated in Harmony Day celebrations.
Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, based on the successful integration of migrants into our community. Students were involved in various activities throughout the week and had the opportunity to try different foods from around the world. Lessons were based around inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.

Open Water Snorkelling Program

Students from Hargraves and Kendall class have participated in snorkelling activities this term.

Before making it into the water, students engage in a number of theory lessons where they learnt about marine life, the effects snorkelling can have on the body and procedures for emergency situations.

Students then progressed to the pool where they completed prerequisite activities such as a 200m continuous swim and 8-minute survival float. Once in the open ocean, students were in their element. Snorkelling has proven an excellent way for students to strengthen their social and emotional skills.

Students have been observed working well together in buddy dive situations, assisting each other during dives. Snorkelling has proven to have great therapeutic effects where students have reported feeling ‘majestical' and ‘calm' when immersed in the marine environment.

Weekly snorkelling activities have proven a great way of engaging our students and addressing outcomes across a number of subject areas.

Uncle Ralph is renowned for working with teenagers across NSW and during the week, provided many opportunities for our students to participate in quality learning experiences. Among the activities which students engaged in were several bushwalks, yabby fishing, a visit to Pilliga Nature Reserve cave site, a traditional smoking ceremony, spear throwing, instrument making, sheep shearing and listening to many stories about Aboriginal history and The Dreaming.

On Friday 11th August, some students joined National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day celebrations at Wyong Race Club. Children's Day was first observed in 1988, with 2017 being the 29th celebration. Each year SNAICC coordinate the event and helps local services, schools, organisations and communities celebrate.

This year, Tom and Joel competed in the Children's Day 'Cook Off' against Wyong High School and Gorokan High School. They had 45 mins to cook a recipe chosen from a book. The boys cooked chicken curry with vegetable and rice and took out the first prize! Winning a bag full of goodies and some beautifully decorated spoons which had been donated by Cains Creations, the boys said they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was great fun!

Many thanks to all the staff involved, the spoons will be proudly displayed in the front office.

Great effort boys and congratulations!
